The Underpass

 This site is an underpass connecting downtown historic Winterthur via Zürcherstrasse with the industrial park. Currently a starkly lit long concrete corridor, the site includes entrances and exits, a bicycle path, pedestrian path and several sculptures on display throughout the underpass. In order to facilitate the revitalization of the industrial park by attracting users to the underpass, subjective issues of use such as perceptions of safety, fear of dark spaces, vandalism and traffic issues associated with pedestrian and bicycle interface will be addressed. Because these problems exist in most cities, this project presents an ideal opportunity for us to explore how lighting can play a role in the reshaping of urban environments. Perception of how design impacts day-to-day human activity will be evaluated as part of the design project.
